The "Sustainability Compendium" is being updated and significantly expanded in its second edition

Sustainability challenges have become an integral part of social discourse and remain of central importance for companies in the tool and mold making industry, including economically. The compendium, written by a VDWF working group, shows solutions for the path to climate-neutral production and sustainable management. It has now been published in a second, updated and expanded edition.

The "Compendium for the evaluation and design of sustainable management in tool and mold making" was compiled and revised by a team of ten authors under the leadership of Prof. Wolfram Heger. The focus was retained, as Heger explains: "The compendium is an aid from toolmakers for toolmakers." All of the recommendations included are tailored precisely to the industry and specifically developed for its requirements. At the same time, the content also goes into scientific detail - but only to the extent necessary for a better understanding.

Significantly expanded range of sustainability topics

While the focus of the first edition was on the climate and environmental protection aspect, the authors have now significantly expanded this and looked at the entire spectrum of sustainability aspects relevant to tool and mold making. The ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) approach was used as a guide. "This means that key topics such as human rights, reporting and employer attractiveness have been incorporated into the document," explains Heger.

The changes also include an update of the materiality assessment, which is based on the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), i.e. the EU directive on corporate sustainability reporting. This replaced the previous Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) in January. Wolfram Heger: "The materiality analysis systematically supports the tool and mold making industry in identifying priority topics - i.e. the aspects that should be actively addressed. Effective initiatives are described for these, and we have significantly expanded the brief assessments that are helpful for many companies." As laws and regulations are constantly changing and new requirements are being added, the section on environmental and climate protection in particular has been updated.

The "Sustainability Compendium" continues to support companies in the tool and mold making industry in effectively integrating sustainability into their operational business. It offers sustainability concepts tailored to the industry - with topics ranging from sustainable tool utilization to "green steel" and heat recovery.

With the publication of the second edition, the VDWF is underlining its concept of providing its members with comprehensive support in implementing sustainability. The compendium explicitly supplements the "VDWF commitment to sustainable management" recently announced by the association. It is designed as a "living" document that takes up current legal, ecological and social requirements for sustainable management, but is also deliberately designed to further develop changing framework conditions with the help of user feedback.
